Military aspects

Hi,

Right now, the military aspect of the game is the least appealing, for me.

I find not fun to select units and give them basic orders, with the current GUI at least, but also as a "macro game" (fortress and its land), as opposed as a "micro game" (dwarf and their needs).

I think i think (yes, twice), it should be automated as soon as possible.
It’s fine if first i control 5 units manually, but i would like to be able to quickly give global orders.

- Patrol an area. Draw a rectangle, and the unit will stand next to it, not moving until something enter the rectangle.
- Actively patrol between two points. Select 2 points, and the unit will auto-move tile by tile from A to B to A to B to A etc
- Guard. The unit won’t move but will stay alert and it queue (unlike Fortify that is move like a sleep stance)

Also there should be a second distinct order, something like aggression range.
- My unit will engage a unit outside the rectangle as far as 1, 5, 10, 50 tiles.
- My unit will engage enemy between A to B if enemy it as range 1, 5, 10, 50...

And, instead of giving order to a single unit, could be a land focus order.
Set a rectangle to be patrolled, then all units with "Patrol Rectangle Alpha" would automatically do it. So if i change Alpha shape, i don’t need to change all the patrolling units one by one.

And i could still manually tune everything by simply moving all units one by one when i like to.

Or maybe not at all, who am i to say !?

Re: Military aspects

Thanks again for the thoughts. I agree that all of these should make their way into the game at some point. Some will take longer than others and may be several 'releases' down the road (I'm aiming for these to be roughly every few months).

An ideal would be to give the player a range of automation functions, which, if used in its entirety might result in them not playing the game much at all, but only watching and seeing what happens. Another player instead might want to micro manage everything. I think a lot of us fit somewhere in between those two extremes and right now, I agree, the game is way too far into the micro management side.
